Centre Considers Cancellation of Al Hind Air, FlyExpress License to Boost Competition in Indian Aviation Sector

The government has granted approvals to two new airlines in a move aimed at reducing the dominance of a few major players in India’s domestic aviation market

New Airlines Receive Green Signal Amid Attempts to End Duopoly

The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has granted No Objection Certificates to Al Hind Air and FlyExpress, making room for new competition in this area of India’s aviation industry. In reality, at this moment, only IndiGo and the Air India Group have a substantial presence in this market, accounting for a massive majority of passenger traffic. In this context, these new airlines will provide some competition in this market.

The approvals were announced by Minister of Civil Aviation K Rammohan Naidu, who added that this development is an important step towards encouraging more operators to join the market. There is no better time for such an attempt, as it has become apparent in the wake of the challenges faced by the current major market players due to their dominance in the market.

Al Hind Air, announced by Kerala-based Alhind Group, and FlyExpress will proceed into the next stage of approvals before being able to operate their services as they seek Air Operator Certificates. Both carriers are set to start operations in 2026 as long as they meet all the necessary requirements before commencing their operations. Their entry will be a welcome addition into a field that has had very few new entrants in the last few years.

These juga dovetail with other policies in the Indian aviation sector. For example, the UDAN regional connectivity policy seeks to enhance connectivity between smaller cities. Small to medium-sized airlines are identified as important for enhancing connectivity between smaller cities, besides ensuring that flight prices remain competitive.

Experts feel that the arrival of Al Hind Air and FlyExpress may help create an environment with better connectivity and even low-priced airline tickets due to the onset of heightened levels of competition. Overall, this move by the government has come as an effective step towards shattering the current duopoly and creating a stronger aviation sector with better diversity.
