August 8, 2025, Mumbai — An 80-year-old man from Mumbai was allegedly defrauded of almost ₹9 crore over the course of 21 months by a group of four women who pretended to be his friend, sister, and lover in a startling case of sextortion. Under the pretense of emotional and legal threats, the accused extorted money from the elderly victim, who has dementia.

Police sources claim that by communicating with the victim regularly and consistently, the women created a web of deceit. Through emotional conversations and video calls, they allegedly won his trust and gradually built relationships that made him feel reliant and attached.

After winning his trust, the accused started making demands for money under a variety of guises, such as made-up family problems, threats of legal repercussions for sharing private material, and fake medical emergencies. The man moved ₹8.97 crore in several bank transactions out of fear of humiliation and isolation.

When the victim’s family confronted him after noticing strange financial activity, the crime was discovered. When they found out, they went to the Mumbai Police and asked to register a First Information Report (FIR). Authorities are investigating all the suspects.

Additionally, police have not ruled out the possibility that the women were involved in a larger organized sextortion scheme. Experts in cybercrime are looking through social media, email, and cell phone records to find everyone involved.

Law enforcement has once again warned the public, especially the elderly, to exercise caution when interacting with strangers on the internet, especially if they request money or personal information.
