2023 Sealed with Over 21,800 Deaths in Railway Accidents: NCRB Data

New Delhi:
In the year 2023, the Indian railways saw a total of 21,803 deaths due to accidents, as per the latest report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The states that reported the highest number of deaths were Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

The statistics disclosed that the most common cause of railway accidents was human mistakes, which accounted for 56 incidents. Mechanical defects, which included poor design, track faults, and the collapse of bridges or tunnels, were responsible for 43 accidents.

Data analysis reveals that most accidents were due to falls from trains or people colliding with the railway tracks, which made up 74.9% (18,480 out of 24,678 cases) of the total railway accidents. These incidents were also responsible for 15,878 deaths (72.8% of the total fatalities in railway accidents) last year.

Aligning with this trend, Maharashtra topped the list with 5,507 incidents (29.8%) of falls from trains or collisions with people at tracks, according to the NCRB report.

These results also point out the pressing necessity for public education, better safety measures, as well as strict law enforcement to prevent accidents, particularly in states and regions with a lot of rail traffic and high-risk areas.
