Coca-Cola has launched a test of an environmentally friendly packaging alternative in some European markets. In lieu of conventional plastic shrink-wrap on multipack sodas, the brand is testing a durable, recyclable paper handle. The test includes popular drinks like Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, and Mezzo Mix launched through its German and Austrian bottling partners.

If scaled up worldwide, this redesign could save roughly 200 tons of plastic per year. Although that is small compared with the company’s global footprint, it does represent a clear step toward scaling back unnecessary plastic. The test also reflects the beverage giant’s intent to align with rising environmental expectations from consumers and regulators.

Impact on Consumers and Sustainability Goals

This newly designed paper carrier was created to offer the same level of ease and strength as conventional plastic wrapping. To shoppers, this means a more straightforward, completely recyclable alternative that fits seamlessly into household waste-sorting systems. It will also reduce the amount of single-use plastic that would otherwise litter the oceans, landfills, or cause waste-processing problems.

However, environmental groups say such changes only partially address the bigger issue. Critics note that Coca-Cola still relies on disposable bottles and cans, a major hurdle to sustainability. Many feel the company needs to increase its refillable systems or reusable packaging if it is to make further improvements environmentally.

The test by Coca-Cola comes at a time when beverage makers globally are under increasing pressure to reduce plastic waste. The brand has publicly been working toward long-term environmental commitments such as increasing recycling rates and reducing its virgin plastics use.
