The talented chess youngster leads the FIDE Circuit 2025 standings and becomes the only Indian male player to be qualified for the prestigious Candidates 2026 lineup

A Historic Breakthrough for Indian Chess
R Praggnanandhaa has created a momentous occasion for Indian chess by becoming the country’s first male player to qualify into the 2026 Candidates Tournament. His qualification came after dominating throughout the 2025 FIDE Circuit, where he consistently outperformed top international competitors and sealed his place with authority.
Praggnanandhaa’s 2025 campaign was nothing short of exceptional, with strong showings at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, the Superbet Chess Classic Romania, and the London Chess Classic Open. A blend of title victories and podium finishes helped him amass 115.17 points on the circuit, keeping him way ahead of his closest rivals.
With this win, the 19-year-old has become India’s only male representative in next year’s Candidates, a tournament that will choose the challenger for the World Chess Championship. Meanwhile, India is going to make an equally strong appearance in the women’s Candidates 2026, as qualification has also been secured by Divya Deshmukh, Koneru Humpy, and R Vaishali.
With the preparations for this prestige event getting underway, Praggnanandhaa has acknowledged the stern competition ahead. He admitted that the 2026 lineup was likely to be one of the strongest in recent years, but his robust performances in 2025 reflected the growing confidence and maturity in his game.
This historic qualification enables Praggnanandhaa to take a big step in his own career and simultaneously elevate India’s standing in the global chess arena, thus inspiring yet another surge of excitement around the country’s rising generation of grandmasters.
