Rising Cyber Crimes Put Maharashtra Police on Alert
Mumbai: Online frauds and cyber crimes are becoming a growing headache for police in Maharashtra, with the state recording more cases this year compared to 2017.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, in a written reply to the state Assembly, revealed that 2,945 cases of cybercrime were reported till September this year, compared to 2,645 cases registered by October 2017. Mumbai has seen the highest number of cases, though exact figures were not mentioned.
To tackle this rising threat, the government has set up 43 cyber labs as cyber police stations, out of which 36 are already running and the rest will be made operational soon. These centres are armed with advanced tools and technology, and since 2016, nearly 200 police officers have been trained to handle online crime investigations.
Authorities are also working with banks and IT officials to prevent such frauds. A meeting held in September brought together top officials to discuss measures against the increasing online scams.
One of the biggest reminders of how serious cybercrime can be was the Cosmos Bank hack in Pune, where hackers used malware to break into the bank’s servers and stole over ₹94 crore in just two days by cloning debit cards.
Police have urged people to stay cautious while investing or making transactions online, as fraudsters continue to find new ways to trick unsuspecting citizens.
