Google Launches “Flex by Google Pay” for effortless, day-to-day credit access in India
The UPI-enabled, RuPay-based digital credit card, launched for the first time on Axis Bank, is intended to make short-term credit more convenient and less opaque for Indian consumers

Redefining how Indians use credit in a digital economy
Google announced the launch of Flex by Google Pay, a new digital credit solution that makes everyday borrowing simpler for customers across India. The solution leverages insights from user behavior and is built on the RuPay network while being deeply integrated with UPI. This product reflects Google’s effort to bridge the gap between digital payments and easy access to credit in a country where credit card penetration remains relatively low.
The first product of this feature is the Google Pay Flex Axis Bank Credit Card, in collaboration with Axis Bank. This card can be directly applied for from within the Google Pay application; the entire process is digital, sans paperwork. Once approved, the card is instantly usable, with no waiting period like one would have been expecting while opting for physical credit cards.
Flex combines the familiarity of UPI payments with the benefits of a credit card, enabling users to pay at millions of online and offline merchants that accept RuPay. It also offers reward points, named “Stars”, on eligible transactions, encouraging everyday usage. Additionally, users can convert selected purchases into easy EMIs, thereby affording flexibility in managing expenses and repayments.
Spending limits, card lock and unlock options, PIN reset, and real-time transaction tracking are integrated in-app features within Google Pay to enhance user control and security. These features would provide users with better visibility into spending, help them use credit more responsibly, and with confidence.
Google’s move comes when India has a large digital payments user base but a relatively small population holding credit cards. Embedding credit access within a widely used payments app, Google wants to introduce millions of users to formal credit in a seamless and user-friendly way. Flex by Google Pay announces a move toward making everyday credit more accessible, transparent, and aligned with India’s rapidly evolving digital ecosystem.
