Mumbai Water Crisis Alert: Reservoir Levels Fall as Monsoon Rains Remain Weak
With water reserves dropping to just 12.49% of capacity, Mumbai faces growing concerns over a possible shortage if stronger monsoon showers do not arrive soon.
Mumbai’s wait for strong monsoon rains is beginning to raise concerns across the city. Every year, the monsoon plays a crucial role in replenishing the lakes that supply water to millions of residents. However, this season’s rainfall has been slower than expected, putting pressure on the city’s water reserves.
According to the latest update, Mumbai’s seven lakes collectively hold around 1.80 lakh million litres (ML) of water as of June 17, which is only 12.49% of their total storage capacity. With reservoir levels continuing to decline, authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
To manage the available water supply, a 10% water cut has already been implemented. While officials remain hopeful that stronger monsoon showers will improve the situation in the coming weeks, concerns are growing over the possibility of a water shortage if rainfall continues to remain below expectations.
For now, residents are being encouraged to use water responsibly and avoid unnecessary wastage. The coming days will be crucial, as consistent rainfall is needed to replenish the city’s reservoirs and ease concerns over Mumbai’s water security during the months ahead.
