Authorities Launch Manhunt Following Campus Gunfire
A mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, left two students dead and at least nine injured on Saturday afternoon, according to local authorities. The shooting occurred in an academic building inside campus when the final examinations were underway, sending shockwaves of panic across the campus. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, with some reportedly in serious condition.
Police added that the suspect left the scene within minutes of the shooting and is still on the run. Hesitantly described as a male dressed in dark clothes, he was last seen on foot leaving the campus area. A full-scale dragnet operation involving the city police, state troopers, and federal agencies began, with parts of Providence staying sealed for hours.
Officials at Brown University issued repeated emergency alerts instructing students, faculty, and staff to shelter in place, to lock doors, and to remain silent until law enforcement secured the area. Students barricaded themselves in classrooms and residential halls as fear spread quickly. The campus was put under lockdown as officers cleared building after building.
Later in the day, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley addressed media, saying the incident was deeply disturbing and that their condolences went out to the victims’ families. They assured the public that all necessary resources were being utilized in pursuit of the suspect and to support those affected by the tragedy.
“Investigation of surveillance footage and eyewitness statements continues, but so far, no motive has been established.” No arrests have been made. The incident once again set off debates over gun violence and safety on college campuses nationwide, while the Brown University community awaits justice and mourns the loss.
