IndiGo was hit by large-scale flight delays and cancellations across India.

Crew shortages combined with new rules limiting duty hours, operational snags, and airport congestion triggered nationwide disruptions that left thousands stranded and prompted regulatory scrutiny

Understanding the causes of the disruptions

IndiGo is experiencing one of its worst operational meltdowns, with flights being delayed or cancelled across major airports including Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Hyderabad. The airline has attributed the chaos to cumulative effects created by factors like the DGCA’s new FDTL norms that have further increased rest requirements, scarcity of trained crew, seasonal traffic squeeze and minor technical glitches that slowed operations.

Crew limitations and new regulations at the core

FDTL rules that came into effect on November 1 drastically cut the number of hours pilots and crew can work. This sharply limited IndiGo’s ability to deploy staff on its high-frequency network. The result has been a wave of last-minute cancellations and unexpected delays as the airline struggled to assign sufficient crew to scheduled flights — a factor widely viewed as the primary trigger for the crisis.

Delays worsened by weather, technology issues, and crowded airports

Apart from the manpower issue, IndiGo reported additional stress in operations caused by technical system glitches and winter scheduling complications. Heavy congestion at busy airports also delayed ground activities, including boarding and aircraft turnaround. The airline operates over 2,200 flights a day, and even minor delays had a domino effect on the carrier’s entire timetable.

Passenger inconvenience and regulatory intervention

Thousands of passengers faced long queues, repeated rescheduling, and sudden cancellations due to disruptions. Many travelers, including families and senior citizens, were struggling with no timely information being given. With IndiGo’s image of on-time flights compromised, the DGCA has intervened by demanding a detailed explanation and corrective action plan.

Steps toward restoring normal operations IndiGo has publicly apologized for the inconvenience and said that it will rationalize and stabilize its flight schedule over the next few days. The airline plans to optimize crew planning, enhance coordination with ATC and the airport, and smoothen flight turnaround processes. However, the speed of recovery will depend on how fast the staffing gaps and system issues are sorted out.
