Kerala Local Body Election Results 2025: Neck and neck fight between LDF, UDF in early trends
Initial vote counting in Kerala's 2025 local body elections points to a closely fought battle between the Left Democratic Front and the Congress-led United Democratic Front, with urban centres emerging as key battlegrounds and the NDA making selective gains

Counting Progresses, Urban Bodies Tilt in Favour of UDF
Counting of votes for the 2025 Kerala local body elections started on Saturday, which initially appeared to be a cliffhanger contest between the state’s two major political alliances. Going by the early trends, the Congress-led United Democratic Front appeared to be doing well in many municipalities and corporations, even as the Left Democratic Front was very much in the fray in most regions. The results underline a highly fragmented mandate across the state.
The UDF has taken an early lead in most of the major urban local bodies, including wards and civic corporations. These trends reflect a potential urban voter swing, where civic infrastructure, governance, and local administration seem to take precedence over other issues. The LDF maintains its stronghold in the remaining municipal areas, keeping the contest neck and neck.
The NDA, also backed by the BJP, has created a notable presence, especially in selected urban centres like the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, and this has been a key development in Kerala’s political landscape. Though the overall footprint of the NDA remains limited, its performance in certain pockets reflects new political dynamics and expanding voter bases.
LDF and UDF are in a neck-and-neck race in rural local bodies, gram panchayats to district panchayats, by narrow margins. Analysts say the results indicate the priority of voters for grassroots governance, welfare delivery, and developmental programmes. As counting is in progress, the final outcome is expected to shape Kerala’s political narrative and set the tone for future electoral contests in the state.
